Employment

Everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute, grow, and feel valued at work. This is no different for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Whether your loved one is just starting their vocational training or seeking employment support, MINDS offers a safe and supportive environment where they can thrive.

Empowering Work Through Personalised Pathways

Every journey towards independence is personal. At MINDS, we believe in creating opportunities for purposeful work. Through job coaching, structured environments, and strong partnerships with inclusive employers, we strive to empower persons with IDD to grow, contribute, and thrive.

Meaningful work builds more than just skills; it builds confidence, nurtures independence, and fosters a deep sense of belonging. We offer employment opportunities that are tailored to your loved one’s goals, strengths, and talents. Whether it is through pre-vocational training or supported full-time employment, these opportunities serve as personalised pathways to success.

Our approach is simple yet powerful: we focus on abilities, not limitations. Delivered through our Regional and Community Hubs, our vocational training for adults with IDD lays the foundation for a life of dignity, purpose, and achievement.

Open Employment

For those ready for open employment, MINDS’ Hi-Job! – Job Placement / Job Support Programme ensures that they are well-prepared and fully supported. Here is how it works:

1 Profiling

We take time to understand your loved one’s strengths, interests, learning needs, and job readiness.

2 Matching

We connect them with jobs that align with their abilities and aspirations, ensuring the best fit for both the individual and employer.

3 Assessment

A work assessment of up to 6 hours is arranged to allow both parties to evaluate suitability before committing.

4 Placement & Support

Upon successful placement, MINDS provides up to 1 year of structured job support and workplace mediation, guided by dedicated staff and Allied Health Professionals, to ensure long-term success.

This process offers reassurance for both persons with IDD and employers, fostering sustainable and well-supported job opportunities.

Building Readiness through
Supported Employment

Not every individual is suited for open employment, and that is perfectly okay. MINDS provides supported employment which offers structured job roles within familiar environments, guided by our Job Placement or Training Officers. These opportunities are designed to build essential work habits, boost confidence, and prepare your loved one for transition into open employment or to take on greater responsibilities at their own pace.

Examples of supported employment include contract work such as headset assembly, packing, or light manufacturing tasks. These roles instil purpose, support lifelong learning, and help persons with IDD adapt progressively to workplace expectations.

To bridge classroom learning to real-world work experiences, MINDS runs social enterprises where persons with IDD gain hands-on training in selected vocations. From baking our signature cookies and crafting meaningful gifts to managing retail outlets, these experiences promote skill development and build confidence and self esteem.

MINDS also collaborates with corporate partners who are committed to inclusive hiring and offer on-site work opportunities, supported by our Training Officers. Such arrangements will allow your loved one to ease into the structure and expectations of open employment, while still benefiting from the guidance and support of our team. This approach helps to build confidence and workplace readiness. As their skills and independence grow, we partner with inclusive employers to support their first step into open employment.

Employment Pathways

Meaningful work begins with meaningful training. We equip persons with IDD with essential vocational and social skills to prepare them for the workplace. This foundation supports their journey towards independence and opens doors to both supported and open employment opportunities. Each individual's employment journey is guided by their evolving needs and readiness, ensuring they are placed in roles that align with their capabilities and aspirations.

Building Inclusive Workplaces Together

Hiring a person with IDD is not just about filling a role – it is about changing lives and creating lasting impact. For families, it is a powerful affirmation of their loved one’s abilities. For employers, inclusive hiring enriches workplace culture, strengthens team spirit, and aligns your business with a greater sense of purpose.

MINDS offers end-to-end assistance to support employers in their inclusive hiring journey. From navigating available grants and providing on-site employment support to redesigning jobs to suit persons with IDD – we are with you every step of the way.

This government-funded initiative supports employers in hiring, training, and integrating persons with disabilities into the workplace. It offers access to grants for job redesign (covering workplace modifications and assistive equipment), subsidised training courses, as well as recruitment and job support services.

Employers who hire persons with disabilities earning below $4,000 a month are eligible for wage offsets. An additional offset is available for their first 9 months if the individual has been unemployed for at least 6 months.

Businesses can receive direct allocation of HDB shop spaces when at least 20% of their workforce comprises persons with disabilities. SMEs also enjoy a 30% rental discount for the first 3 years, with an option to extend.

This grant supports organisations in cultivating inclusive hiring practices, strengthening internal capabilities, and enhancing the retention of employees with disabilities.

If you are an employer committed to building a more inclusive workforce, MINDS is here to support you! Hiring individuals with IDD not only attracts dedicated and loyal employees; it also fosters a more compassionate and socially responsible society.

For a seamless inclusive hiring experience, we offer customised training, job redesign tailored for persons with IDD, and post-placement support. Together, we can build inclusive workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
