Advocacy
When your loved one shares their story—their hopes, strengths and ideas, it does more than raise awareness. It opens MINDS, reshapes narratives and helps build a society where persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are heard, respected and celebrated.
At MINDS, advocacy means standing with persons with IDD, not just speaking for them. It’s about amplifying their voices, building their confidence and creating spaces for their rightful place in our communities. Through support services that empower self-expression, we are helping to cultivate advocates, change-makers and storytellers.

Our Lives, Our Voices
Your loved one has a voice, and it deserves to be heard.
Our Lives, Our Voices (OLOV) is a flagship advocacy programme designed to equip persons with IDD with essential communication and interpersonal skills, empowering them to pursue autonomy, purpose and active participation in society.

Our Lives, Our Voices (OLOV) Advocacy Programme
Through trainer-facilitated, peer-led sessions and workshops, persons with IDD learn to:
- Express their feelings, thoughts and perspectives clearly
- Speak up for their needs, goals and dreams
- Participate in public conversations, panels and forums
- Understand their rights—not just as persons with IDD but as valued members of society
- Represent themselves effectively in decision-making spaces
By nurturing these life skills, MINDS fosters self-advocacy that starts from within and creates lasting impact for persons with IDD.
Special Interest Groups
Sometimes, advocacy starts with a shared passion. Through Special Interest Groups, your loved one can explore their interests, connect with peers and grow in confidence, while learning how to speak up through the things they love.
These groups provide safe, supportive spaces for persons with IDD to:
- Stay active through sports and recreational activities
- Participate in environmental and social community initiatives
- Build friendships and social skills that strengthen their voice and self-advocacy
The Special Interest Groups are a springboard for discovering identity, forming meaningful connections and championing shared concerns. They also play a vital role in the broader caregiver support network, helping to build stronger families and more inclusive communities.
Systemic Change through Community Collaboration
Real change requires collective effort. While empowering individuals is at the heart of what we do, MINDS is equally committed to driving systemic transformation through strategic partnerships.
We actively collaborate with:
- Government agencies and policymakers to shape inclusive policies that protect and uphold the rights of persons with IDD, including those navigating the justice system
- Media and educational institutions to challenge stereotypes and foster greater understanding and acceptance
- Employers and service providers to advocate for accessible practices, inclusive hiring and workplace integration
Through these collaborative efforts, we are building a future where persons with IDD are recognised, respected and represented at every level of society.
From Silence to Strength
In these stories, our clients, their families and their supporters share the moments that sparked courage, connection and change. These are not just feel-good stories, they are proof that advocacy makes a difference, and that inclusion isn’t just a vision; it’s a lived reality.
