Key Word Sign Singapore

An augmentative and alternative communication approach to aid speech development, understanding and expression.

Connecting Beyond Words

Key Word Sign (KWS) offers a powerful way to communicate when spoken words aren’t enough. Designed for individuals with communication challenges, especially persons with intellectual disability (ID), KWS combines simple gestures and signs from sign language with spoken words to build understanding and meaningful connection.

Backed by research and proven in real-world practice, KWS is widely adopted by caregivers, educators and specialists as a supportive tool for interaction with persons with ID. Beyond communication, it also fosters emotional connection and understanding.

Key Word Sign Singapore: A Vision for Inclusion

KWS Singapore was developed in partnership with the Singapore Association for the Deaf and Key Word Sign Australia/SCOPE (Australia). Today, it is a proprietary initiative, trademarked and stewarded by MINDS.

As part of our broader suite of intellectual disability resources for families and caregivers, we aim to expand the reach and adoption of KWS. Our goal is to help more persons with ID express themselves with confidence, build deeper connections with others and participate more fully in everyday life.

Why Use Key Word Sign?

KWS is a simplified form of signing that uses gestures for key words in a sentence, combined with speech. It helps individuals with verbal communication challenges express themselves more clearly, while offering those around them a clearer way to understand and respond.

KWS is especially useful for:

  • Persons with ID and those with communication challenges
  • Families seeking new ways to connect with non-speaking loved ones
  • Educators and therapists looking for inclusive, visual tools to support learning and engagement
