Special education teachers work with children who have a variety of disabilities
such as intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, visual and hearing
impairments. Special education teachers use various techniques and strategies
to promote learning; and develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

Special education teachers design and teach appropriate curricula, assign work geared towards each pupil’s ability. They are involved in the pupil’s behavioural and academic development, helping pupils develop emotionally, feel comfortable in social situations, and be aware of socially acceptable behaviour. Special education teachers communicate frequently with parents, social workers, school psychologists, speech-language, occupational and physical therapists, school administrators and other teachers, in order to provide a multidisciplinary approach to educating the pupils with special needs.
