In 2002, MINDS EDS realized the lack of awareness towards disability medicine
in Singapore.
Many intellectually disabled youths were observed to have most of their medical needs not being met, primarily due to of the lack of understanding by medical professionals on the special needs of the intellectually disabled and care givers lack of knowledge on appropriate long term continual medical care and monitoring of their ward to prevent impairment to both quality of life and further disabilities.
A large proportion of caregivers also lacked proper information on available resources. As such, EDS formed a medical network comprising of various medical specialists to address the holistic care needs of the ID person.
The network members came from the primary health care and specialists sector.
The role of the primary health care members was to provide basic medical screening on general health, consultation for referrals etc.
The specialists members provided both advice and consultation on special cases that needed greater acute intervention, particularly on mental health, skin infection management, neurology (epilepsy) etc.
