Approval of the land in Yio Chu Kang came in Dec 1985 and lots of hard work began then to make the place functional and operational. After much hard work to renovate and retrofit, Yio Chu Kang Employment Development Centre (YEDC) was officially opened on 8 September 1988.
YEDC was initially designed to provide services to 80 Intellectually Disabled persons. However, as the demand for services grew over the years, the capacity had to enlarge to 120 persons. With recent developments, the enrolment has hit a high of 140 clients.
These clients come mainly from the northern part of Singapore, stretching from Bishan to Woodlands. They are mainly adults from 18 years old to 55 years old and a mix of both genders.
