On 1st Oct 2004, YEDC restructured its training units to provide services more efficiently and effectively. With the re-engineering of work-processes and resource allocation, the restructuring enables the centre to maximise the limited resources.
The restructuring also allow better matching between trainee's talents and job scope of each contract work.
From the previous four units, two new units are formed. The six new units are:
The two headset production units focus on the recycling of headsets from 5 different airlines. The main training objective is to develop a strong sense of work productivity and responsibility.
The Special Training Unit aims to develop a strong sense of self-motivation and discipline amongst trainees with difficulties in these aspects of work. The unit will focus on developing job skills relevant to such issues.
Trainees experiencing adjustment issues and other special needs will also be channelled into this unit for better management and development.
This unit also focuses on developing a variety of skills that help prepare trainees with Open Employment potential, for instance, appropriate social skills and community mobility skills etc.
The Open Employment Trainees (potential) are also being trained to mentor those who require more training support. This unit pilots a peer-mentoring programme.
This unit specialises in doing projects that require a wide range of skills, i.e., fine motor-skills in tying ribbons on small objects/paper bags and bottling up honey and re-packaging of items (e.g., stationary), and packaging Compact Discs and agricultural products.
The trainees are exposed to a wide array of projects that help introduce the diversity of job tasks that are also present in any open employment. This will help prepare the trainees in learning the adaptive skills and multi-tasking when needed in the future.
This unit emphasizes on training the trainees in food hygiene, food preparation and food serving. This is to prepare them to be employed in the food industry or other food related industries.
Trainees with interest in food preparation will be channelled to this unit for further training and development.
This unit provides specialised training for trainees with talents in sports. Currently, the unit provides three programmes for the trainees.
The SSG focuses on developing individuals with talents in specific sports, like bowling, badminton, athletic and swimming. The unit also trains the selected group of trainees to be able to lead the other fellow trainees in morning stretching exercises, hence, developing their leadership qualities.
The ISG focuses on assisting all trainees to pick up a sport so as to have healthier living. The main aim is to help them develop sports as their choice of recreational activity.
The AOG stresses on healthy living, with controlled balance dieting, healthy habits development and exercising. This is for those with Body Mass Indexes that indicate risks of obesity, mild and gross obesity. Better health conditions promote better productivity.
The Sports Development Unit also helps to introduce therapeutic element that promotes good mental health for the trainees, for e.g., the therapeutic garden for mood management programme.
