The Appropriate Adult for Persons with Mental Disability (AAPMD) Scheme provides assistance to Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (PWDs), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Mental Health Issues who are required to provide statements to Investigating Officer (IO) during the investigation process.

Since MINDS has been appointed as the service provider in January 2016, AAPMD renders its services to the following law enforcement agencies:

  • Singapore Police Force (SPF)
  • Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA)
  • Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB)
  • Immigration & Checkpoint Authority of Singapore (ICA)
  • Singapore Customs

Volunteers are trained to act as a bridge to facilitate the interview process between the IO and suspect/victim/witness in question, enabling them to understand IOs queries and communicate more effectively.

Recruitment, training and management of AAPMD volunteers

AAPMD volunteers are required to attend a one day mandatory training on understanding and working with persons with mental disabilities. For interested parties, you may find out more about being an AAPMD volunteer here.
