The Appropriate Adult (AA) Service provides support to Singapore Police Force (SPF), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) during the investigating interviews involving detainees, victims or witnesses suspected of having Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Mental Health issues, during interview, through trained AA volunteers. To find out more, click here.

Volunteer Requirements:

The role of the AA volunteer is not to provide legal advice to the suspect/victim/witness, but serve as a bridge between the Investigation Officer (IO) and the suspect/victim/witness to enable both parties to communicate more effectively during interview. This means that the suspect/victim/witness does not misunderstand the questions asked or that he is not misunderstood by the Investigation Officer. This will ensure that statements recorded are reliable.

While the recruitment drive is targeted at Allied Healthcare Professionals (including social workers, psychologists, special education teachers, occupational therapists, psychiatrists), other professionals, active VWO (voluntary welfare organizations) volunteers/Board members, parents, care-givers and grassroots leaders are also encouraged to sign up as an Appropriate Adult.

With immediate effect, lawyers and ex-SPF/CNB officers are welcomed to register as AA volunteers. To prevent conflict of interest, lawyers responding to the activation are required to sign an undertaking form to ascertain that they will not be assisting in any cases and/or the firm that they worked for, would not be subsequently involved as defence counsel for the subject.

Criteria of AA volunteer:

Males and females aged 21 years old and above
Willing to be activated at any hour of the day
Have a passion and interest towards helping persons with intellectual disability, ASD and/or mental health issues
Level-headed individuals who are capable of sound reasoning

All applicants will have to attend a mandatory one-day training session and the selection process applies. Successful applicants will be informed of the training details at least a month prior.
